Tobias Zaft
Tobias Zaft is a wanderer between cultures. After studying art at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 2002 to 2007, he continued his artistic training from 2007 to 2009 at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing through two graduate scholarships. Since then, Zaft has lived and worked between Germany and China.
From the artist's intercultural experiences—the encounter of different "systems"—emerged his central theme: the interactions between technology and humanity. His work encompasses a wide range of media, from drawings, objects, and sculptures to video works and expansive installations.
He frequently employs comic-like narratives and motion sequences. Through these, he makes visible and visually tangible the complex metabolic processes of an increasingly technology- and economy-driven world, which lie hidden behind the flawless surfaces of our digital companions.
In Zaft's works, the aim is not to demonize technology outright—rather, in his artistic practice, he explores its aesthetic and experimental potential by freeing it from the dictates of capitalist utility logic and its often questionable "usefulness." Tobias Zaft creates utopian spaces through his works, where we can experience alternative realities without risking devastating consequences for humanity and the environment.
